Plesiosaur fossil vertebra

This is a large Plesiosaur Vertebra fossil found at the Kimmeridge clay beds along the Jurassic coast, Dorset, UK. The vertebra features a rich earthy colour which is typical of this location and has very little roll wear from the sea. The shape is still in tact for its size and the condition is superb.

Plesiosaur was a marine reptile from the jurassic and cretaceous period approximately 200 million years ago, Plesiosaurs had wide bodies and paddle like flippers and would prey upon fish and squid like animals , we know this from the type of teeth they had. Often depicted as having long slender necks, which was the case for most, other species from the same family had shorter necks, probably down to different hunting techniques and areas. Despite living at the same time as Dinosaurs and seemingly having Dinosaur qualities, Plesiosaur was in fact a reptile that could grow up to 11 metres in length.
